Robotics for humanitarian demining

  • Date
    9 July 2025
    Timeframe
    09:00 - 17:00 CEST
    Duration
    8 hours

This interactive workshop immerses participants in the critical mission of humanitarian demining, using robotics to simulate the safe retrieval and delivery of essential supplies in mine-contaminated zones. Inspired by real-world operations, attendees will navigate challenging terrains with robots, overcoming obstacles such as landmines and debris to aid vulnerable communities. The session highlights the pivotal role of technology in restoring safety and viability to lands affected by conflict, echoing the symbolism of Geneva’s Broken Chair, a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against landmines and cluster munitions. Through teamwork, problem-solving, and strategic planning, participants gain hands-on experience in humanitarian robotics, fostering awareness of the global impact of demining efforts and the innovative solutions that support them.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Apply basic robotic programming and navigation skills to simulate humanitarian missions.
    • Analyze challenges faced in mine-affected environments and develop strategic solutions.
    • Collaborate effectively within a team to complete complex tasks under constraints.
    • Evaluate the humanitarian impact of robotics in demining and post-conflict land rehabilitation.
    • Reflect on the ethical and social significance of demining efforts symbolized by the Broken Chair.
