This is a replay of the session that took place on the Solutions Stage during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland from 8 to 11 July, 2025. This session will spotlight the Digital Emblem project—an initiative led by the ICRC and rooted in the Geneva Conventions to identify the specific protection of medical and certain humanitarian digital infrastructure during armed conflict. Just as the Red Cross emblem signals protection in the physical world, the digital emblem will be designed to serve as a recognized marker in cyberspace. With encouragement from all 196 States party to the Geneva Conventions at last year’s International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and similar support from over 160 tech companies, the project is advancing through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to develop global technical standards. As technologies continue to develop at an unprecedented rate, a key priority, however, is ensuring that AI systems can detect and respect this emblem—making machine-readable protection a reality in future conflict settings.
