This talk will provide an overview of the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) programme, showing the motivation, context, high-level architecture, and scientific and programmatic aspects. It will outline the concept of Digital Twins of the Earth that will developed as part of DestinE and offer an overview how artificial intelligence, and in particular machine learning, will help to run, improve, and use Digital Twins of the Earth. To provide specific examples, we will present use cases for machine learning that make numerical models more efficient, improve the models, make better use of the model’s output and help to compare datasets from different sources. Finally, we will discuss challenges and infrastructure needs for the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in Earth system science.
