Heating and cooling buildings accounts for 15% of global emissions, largely because most of the world’s buildings were constructed before energy efficiency was a priority. As a result, our homes, offices, and commercial spaces leak heat through walls, windows, and roofs, wasting energy and costing hundreds of billions in annual expenditure worldwide. To solve this, more than 100 million homes must be retrofitted in Europe alone. But with limited time, money, and labour, how can governments know where to start, what to do, how much it will cost, and whether insulation is actually working once installed?

In this session, Lucy Lyons, CEO of Kestrix, introduces Kestrix — a new “Google Maps of heat los” technology. By applying machine learning and computer vision to thermal images captured by drones, Kestrix creates exterior 3D thermal models of buildings, enabling rapid, remote assessments of heat loss without stepping indoors.  Applied at scale, the result is a powerful, novel approach to creating a roadmap to net zero buildings: a way for cities to prioritise funding, target vulnerable homes, and de-risk investment in retrofit.
