For thousands of years, humanity has worked with passive materials – where the intelligence flowed in one direction – from engineer to object.  However, the pressing needs of biomedicine and sustainable development now require something very different. For bioengineering of the agential material of life, we enter a new era of collaboration, not micromanagement, with cells and tissues. In this presentation, I will describe how intelligence permeates every size scale of our body, and how the bioelectric language that comprises our minds likewise regulates the growth and form of our bodies. I will describe the emerging science of using the bioelectric and other interfaces to communicate anatomical goals to groups of cells and crack the bioelectric code. AI stands poised to serve as a translator to the intelligence of the body, leading to transformative applications in regenerative medicine and the creation of useful synthetic living machines.
