AI opens many opportunities while posing many challenges, especially for persons with disabilities. In this panel we will discuss the challenges of developing AI-enabled systems to enhance audiovisual accessibility that can be used in a safe and ethical manner, protecting fundamental rights. We will address the risks associated with AI, such as bias, especially considering the needs of persons with disabilities. We will explore how audiovisual accessibility can be enhanced with AI-based tools but will also highlight the barriers that still exist when diverse users try to access certain digital tools which have not been developed using universal design principles. Adopting the “nothing about us without us” slogan, we will advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities when developing systems, to take advantage of first-hand experiences, avoiding leaving anyone behind and preventing discrimination, unfair treatment, and loss of privacy.
