Many in the civilian AI community don’t realize that today’s AI innovations could have serious consequences for international peace and security. Yet AI practitioners, whether researchers, engineers, product developers, or others, can play critical roles in mitigating risks, especially of misuse of civilian AI products, through the decisions they make throughout the life cycle of AI technologies. Change needs to start with the education of AI practitioners. The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), with the generous support of the EU, have been working with AI educators and students from around the world to do just that. Showcasing the most urgent takeaways and messages from the project, “Promoting Responsible Innovation in Artificial Intelligence for Peace and Security”, this session will highlight why Responsible AI education is so important, and how to do it.
