Duration of Engagement
When you step into a leadership position, whether as a Hub Leader, Regional Lead, or Impact Lead, you extend your commitment to the Young AI Leaders Community. Typically, as a Young AI Leader, your engagement period is 2 years. However, taking on a leadership role adds an additional 2 years to your commitment.
Role of a Hub Leader
Hub Leaders will initially be elected by the AI for Good team for the community launch. After the launch, future Hub Leaders will be elected by their local hubs, ensuring that leadership transitions are rooted in community involvement and engagement. As a Hub Leader, your responsibilities are crucial to the smooth operation and impact of your hub. These responsibilities include:
Leadership and Engagement
You will actively engage members, encouraging participation in AI for Good initiatives. Your leadership fosters collaboration and ensures that projects are impactful and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You ensure that all members respect the community’s charter and values, maintaining harmony and alignment with the community’s mission.
Communication and Coordination
As the main point of contact, you are responsible for maintaining clear communication within your hub and with the AI for Good team. You coordinate updates and keep members informed of important milestones. You will work closely with these leaders to ensure they fulfill their roles effectively. Your guidance helps ensure cohesion within the leadership team.
Administration and Reporting
You manage member details and ensure accurate records, including new recruits and member updates. You will provide necessary details, such as social media handles and professional backgrounds, to keep profiles updated. You oversee your team’s performance, particularly the Regional and Impact Leads, to ensure they meet the hub’s goals. This includes monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) to track the success of projects. You provide feedback and mentorship to hub members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation .
Projects
You lead the design, implementation, and management of local AI projects that address community challenges. These projects align with AI for Good’s mission and the SDGs. You provide regular updates and reports to the AI for Good team, ensuring your hub’s progress aligns with global goals.
Role of a Regional Lead
As a Regional Lead within the Young AI Leaders Community, your role is vital in ensuring cross-hub collaboration and driving regional projects that align with the broader goals of AI for Good. Your responsibilities extend beyond your local hub, providing leadership and coordination across the entire region.
Regional Collaboration and Communication
As a Regional Lead, you will coordinate with other hubs in your region to develop and execute collaborative AI for Good projects. You play a key role in aligning hub efforts with regional challenges, ensuring that initiatives are impactful and relevant. You are responsible for ensuring clear and consistent communication between hubs within your region. This includes sharing best practices, facilitating cross-hub initiatives, and ensuring that all hubs are aligned with the overarching mission of AI for Good.
Project and Initiative Development
You will lead the development of AI projects that address region-specific issues. This involves working with local hubs to identify challenges and opportunities, ensuring that each project is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a Regional Lead, you ensure that resources, knowledge, and expertise are shared efficiently across hubs. This helps maximize the impact of regional initiatives and fosters a culture of collaboration and support.
Reporting and Accountability
You will be responsible for tracking the progress of regional initiatives and reporting to the AI for Good team. This includes submitting detailed reports on project outcomes, challenges faced, and any future plans for expansion. You oversee the performance of each hub in your region, ensuring they are meeting their objectives and contributing to the region’s overall success. You may also provide feedback and support to Hub Leaders to enhance their effectiveness.
Leadership and Mentorship
As a Regional Lead, you act as a mentor and support system for Hub Leaders within your region. You provide guidance, share insights, and ensure they are equipped to lead their hubs successfully. You are responsible for ensuring that all hubs within your region work cohesively towards shared goals, fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration across the region.
Role of an Impact Lead
As an Impact Lead within the Young AI Leaders Community, your role is essential for tracking, measuring, and reporting the effectiveness of your hub’s initiatives. You ensure that all projects align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrate measurable outcomes that reflect the positive societal impact of AI for Good.
Performance Tracking and KPI Monitoring
The Impact Lead is responsible for setting and monitoring KPIs that measure the success of the hub’s initiatives. This includes evaluating the effectiveness of projects in relation to the SDGs and ensuring that progress is consistently monitored. You evaluate the growth of the hub, including membership engagement, project outcomes, and overall contributions to the AI for Good mission. You ensure that all initiatives are delivering the desired results and meeting set objectives.
Data Collection and Reporting
You are responsible for gathering data on the hub’s activities, from member participation to project impacts. This data is crucial for evaluating how well the hub is performing and where improvements can be made. The Impact Lead submits detailed reports to the AI for Good team, showcasing the results of the hub’s initiatives. These reports include key metrics, qualitative and quantitative data, and a summary of the overall impact the hub has made during that year.
Project Alignment and Support
As an Impact Lead, you ensure that every initiative undertaken by your hub aligns with one or more of the SDGs. You also support project teams in refining their strategies to better meet these goals. You work closely with Hub Leaders and Regional Leads to guide the planning and execution of initiatives, ensuring that projects are designed to create measurable, meaningful impact.
Feedback and Continuous Improvement
As an Impact Lead, you regularly provide feedback on the performance of ongoing initiatives. You help identify areas for improvement and offer guidance on how to enhance the effectiveness of projects in achieving their goals. You promote the adoption of best practices across the hub, ensuring that project management and impact measurement are consistently aligned with AI for Good’s broader objectives.
Role of an Alumni
Upon completing your leadership term or engagement period within the Young AI Leaders Community, you transition to become Alumni. As alumni, you no longer hold active roles in leadership or hub operations, but continue to play an important part in the community’s growth and success.
Mentorship and Guidance
As an alumni you are encouraged to take on a mentorship role for current Young AI Leaders and newly elected leadership teams. Your experience and insights from your time in a leadership position or in the community are invaluable in guiding and supporting the next generation of Young AI Leaders.
Continued Involvement
While no longer in an active leadership position, as an alumni you are welcome to stay involved by attending events, participating in AI for Good initiatives, and offering expertise in specialized areas. You are a key part of maintaining continuity in the community and ensuring that lessons learned are passed down to future Young AI Leaders.
Networking Opportunities
As part of the alumni network, former Young AI Leaders are connected with other global AI for Good alumni and professionals on the Neural Network. This network serves as a platform for continued collaboration and the exchange of ideas across regions.
Recognition and Legacy
Alumni status is a recognition of the member’s contribution and dedication to the AI for Good movement. Alumni carry the legacy of their leadership forward and continue to represent the values and goals of AI for Good.
Leadership Election Process
Leadership positions within the Young AI Leaders Community are designed to ensure transparency, continuity, and community involvement. The election process follows a structured timeline, allowing for a smooth transition of leadership roles such as Hub Leader, Regional Lead, and Impact Lead.
The election of new leadership positions will take place mid-way through the current leadership’s term, typically between May and September of the second year. This allows ample time for newly elected leaders to prepare for their roles and ensures a seamless transition in leadership responsibilities.
Candidate Presentations
All Young AI Leaders who wish to run for a leadership position—whether for Hub Leader, Regional Lead, or Impact Lead—are required to give a 10-15 minute presentation to their hub. In this presentation, candidates will explain why they are the best fit for the role and share new initiatives or ideas they have to grow the hub and further its impact. These ideas should align with the specific responsibilities of the position they are running for, whether it’s leading community engagement, tracking impact, or fostering regional collaboration.
These presentations provide an opportunity for candidates to showcase their vision, leadership abilities, and commitment to driving AI for Good initiatives. Each hub member will then vote, and the candidates who receive the majority of votes will be elected to their respective positions, ensuring a fair and democratic process for leadership transition.
Voting Process
Elections are conducted using a majority rules system, requiring at least 60% of the hub members to be present to cast their votes and witness the candidates’ presentations. This ensures broad participation and that all voices within the hub are represented in the leadership selection process. Each hub member will have the opportunity to vote for the new Hub Leader, Regional Lead, and Impact Lead. The candidates who receive the majority of votes will be elected to their respective positions, ensuring a fair and democratic process for leadership transition.
Reporting New Leadership
Once the election is completed, the current Hub Leader is responsible for officially indicating the new leadership team to the AI for Good team. This includes submitting the names and details of the newly elected Hub Leader, Regional Lead, and Impact Lead. This report must be submitted by the beginning of October in the final year of the current leadership’s term.
Leadership Transition Period
To ensure continuity and the effective handover of responsibilities, the newly elected leadership team—including the Hub Leader, Regional Lead, and Impact Lead—will undergo a 3-month transition period. This period is crucial for preparing the incoming leaders to take on their roles with full knowledge and confidence.
This transition period, which begins immediately after the election results are finalized, is designed to ensure that the newly elected leaders are fully equipped with all the necessary information and support. By the time they formally take over, they will have gained a deep understanding of the hub’s operations, ensuring a smooth and effective transition of leadership.
During this transition period, the newly elected leaders will be expected to shadow their respective counterparts (the outgoing Hub Leader, Regional Lead, and Impact Lead). This hands-on approach allows the new leadership team to observe, learn, and engage with the responsibilities and tasks they will soon manage.
Key Areas of Focus
The transition period will cover all essential aspects of hub leadership, including administrative processes, impact reporting, contacts and networking, recruitment and member engagement, and project and initiative management. Newly elected leaders will learn how to manage member information, maintain records, and ensure charter compliance. They will also gain insight into the processes for tracking KPIs and submitting detailed reports on project outcomes. Building connections with key stakeholders, regional partners, and the AI for Good team is an important part of ensuring that the hub remains well-integrated into the broader community. Recruitment strategies, member management, and fostering engagement within the hub will also be covered. Additionally, leaders will understand how to manage ongoing and future projects aligned with the SDGs.
Hub Branding and Communication
Effective branding and communication are key to establishing the identity and reach of each hub within the Young AI Leaders Community. These guidelines ensure consistency, clarity, and alignment with the broader AI for Good mission while allowing hubs to showcase their unique regional contributions.
Hub Logos and Visual Identity
Each hub is provided with a unique logo to represent its identity within the Young AI Leaders Community. Hubs are required to use only their assigned hub logo in all branding and communication efforts. The AI for Good team will provide the hub logo to the hub curator upon the official opening of each hub.
Communication Guidelines
All communications, whether through social media, events, or internal hub updates, must maintain a clear, consistent tone that reflects the mission of AI for Good. Hub leaders are responsible for ensuring that communication aligns with the values of transparency, inclusivity, and integrity.
Hubs are encouraged to actively engage with their communities via social media, promoting projects, events, and regional successes. When doing so, they should tag the AI for Good handles and use the appropriate hashtags (#AIforGood, #YoungAILeaders) to increase visibility and reinforce the global movement.
Each hub is responsible for communicating its initiatives, projects, and events to its local community and stakeholders. This includes creating promotional banners, announcements, and content that reflects the hub’s specific contributions to AI for Good.
Collaboration Announcements
When hubs within the same region collaborate on significant projects, an official announcement should be made, highlighting the shared efforts. This adds traction to the initiatives and ensures that collaborative projects receive the necessary support from the community and AI for Good.
Administrative Work
To ensure smooth operations and efficient management of each hub within the Young AI Leaders Community, leadership teams are responsible for establishing a centralized system for all hub-related administrative tasks. This system ensures that no documentation is lost, allowing future leaders to easily access important files.
Hub Email and Document Storage
Upon the creation of a new hub, the leadership team must establish a dedicated hub email. This email will serve as the central communication point for all hub activities, including communication with other hubs and external entities such as recruitment partners, event organizers, and stakeholders. Having a hub-specific email ensures professionalism, consistency, and efficient coordination both within the community and with external partners.
In tandem with the hub email, the leadership must create a shared drive to store and manage all essential hub documentation.
This drive should contain logos provided by the AI for Good team for branding and communication, impact reports tracking the success of projects and alignment with the SDGs, project documentation including plans, objectives, KPIs, and outcomes, recruitment documents detailing processes for onboarding new members, and meeting minutes and event reports for transparency and record-keeping.
Upon the creation of the hub email, the leadership team must add their email address to a centralized Excel document. This document will be maintained by the AI for Good team and distributed in every monthly newsletter to the Young AI Leaders Community. By including their hub email, leadership ensures that they remain connected to the wider network of hubs and have an official point of contact for any collaborative efforts or external inquiries.
Consistent Documentation Practices
The AI for Good team provides standardized templates for impact reporting, project updates, and other essential documentation in every monthly newsletter. The hub leadership must ensure these templates are consistently used and stored in the shared drive for easy access and review.
The leadership team is also responsible for maintaining up-to-date records of all hub members, including contact details, roles, and social media profiles. This information should be securely stored in the hub’s drive for efficient management and outreach.
The hub’s shared drive ensures that all current and future leadership teams have easy access to important documents, ensuring continuity in operations and preventing the loss of critical information during leadership transitions. Leaders must regularly back up the hub’s key documentation to prevent data loss, including impact reports, recruitment files, and project documentation.
Each hub is required to input data into a management system to monitor growth, member engagement, and project outcomes. This system helps track the hub’s evolution over time and ensures transparency in operations. The Impact Lead will oversee the storage of project documentation and ensure that reports are submitted on time to the AI for Good team. They will also track KPIs and store these metrics in the hub’s drive for long-term tracking.
Misconduct
To maintain the integrity and mission of the Young AI Leaders Community, all members, especially those in leadership roles, are expected to adhere to the highest ethical standards. Any form of misconduct is taken seriously, and clear consequences are outlined to ensure accountability and fairness.
Members are expected to actively contribute to hub initiatives and projects, promoting a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. All interactions within the community should be conducted with respect, promoting diversity and inclusion in all hub activities. Leaders and members must follow the community’s charter, ensuring that their actions reflect the values and goals of AI for Good.
Unauthorized use of AI for Good or hub logos for personal gain or external projects is strictly prohibited. Favoritism, nepotism, or monopolizing leadership opportunities to the detriment of others is considered misconduct. Any action that discredits or disrespects the United Nations, AI for Good, ITU or collaborating organizations will be met with immediate removal of the community.
Any member who observes or experiences misconduct is encouraged to report the issue directly to their Hub Leader or Regional Lead. In serious cases, reports can be escalated to the AI for Good team. Upon receiving a report, the leadership team will initiate a review of the hub to assess the situation and take appropriate action.
First-time or minor offenses may result in a formal warning, with members required to correct their behavior through training or mentorship. For repeated or serious violations, members may face temporary suspension or probation, during which their activities will be closely monitored. In cases of gross misconduct, such as severe misuse of branding, abuse of power, or repeated violations, members will be permanently removed from the community. This decision will be communicated to all relevant parties to maintain transparency.
Members removed for misconduct will lose their status as alumni and forfeit any associated privileges.
