Yvonne Johnson

Yvonne Johnson

My name is Yvonne, I am a wife and a mother of three. I was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in May 2021. Initially the news was devastating and to be honest it still is. My coping mechanism is to communicate with others about this dreaded disease and to raise awareness. Raising awareness is very important to me, especially in my community with people of colour. Culturally I am challenged because in my culture talking about your medical issues is not the done thing.

Despite everything, my outlook is positive, I try not to dwell on my situation instead, I build memories, and I am passionate about raising awareness. I am also intrigued to know more about tools that can help people like me communicate more efficiently. Communication is important to me, because my speech is affected by this disease. Speech was a huge part of my personality, my career and my job when I was employed. I sometimes feel a bit isolated because of my nonstandard speech. So therefore, I want to gain as much knowledge as possible before I leave this planet. Feeling purposeful is my goal by extending my knowledge to help others know and understand what it is like for people with Motor Neurone Disease.
