Rafael Russo Almeida

Rafael is currently pursuing a PhD in Physics in Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. His field of study tries to understand the interaction of high intensity structured lasers and matter, focusing on the fourth state of matter: plasma. His research aims to develop new sources of light and particle beams with applications ranging from medicine and industry to fundamental research. He also teaches at his university undergraduate and graduate courses on Fundamental and Plasma Physics. Moreover, he tries to have an active role on his academic community, being a student representative in the Pedagogical Council and in the Doctoral School of his institution.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are an everyday tool used in his field, leveraging the use of international high-performance supercomputers to achieve new results in physics research. As a student member of the Pedagogical Council, he has taken an active role on writing a guidebook on the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and evaluation in Instituto Superior Técnico.

Rafael was born in Viseu, Portugal, where he is now a member of the local hub of the Young AI Leaders Community at AI for Good. He intends to help his hometown to get to know the possibilities and prospects of the use of these new AI tools for local activities and to make Viseu a city on the map of Artificial Intelligence.
