Meeting of the ITU Focus Group on Machine Learning for Future Networks including 5G

The ITU-T Focus Group on Machine Learning for Future Networks including 5G was established by ITU-T Study Group 13 at its meeting in Geneva, 6-17 November 2017. The Focus Group will draft technical reports and specifications for machine learning (ML) for future networks, including interfaces, network architectures, protocols, algorithms and data formats.

    Slawomir Stanczak studied electrical engineering with specialization in control theory at the Wroclaw University of Technology and at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin). He received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in 1998 and the Dr.-Ing. degree (summa cum laude) in electrical engineering in 2003, both from TU Berlin; the Habilitation degree (venialegendi) followed in 2006. He is currently a Full Professor for network information theory at TU Berlin and the head of the Wireless Communications and Networks department at Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI). The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) is ranked among Top 20 Artificial Intelligence Research Labs in the world. Prof. Stanczak has been involved in research and development activities in wireless communications since 1997. In 2004 and 2007, he was a Visiting Professor with RWTH Aachen University and in 2008, he was a Visiting Scientist with Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA. He is a co-author of two books and more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers in the area of information theory, wireless communications, signal processing and machine learning. Prof. Stanczak received research fellowships from the German Research Foundation and the Best Paper Award from the German Communication Engineering Society in 2014. He was a Co-chair of the 14th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC 2013). Between 2009 and 2011, he was an Associate Editor of the European Transactions for Telecommunications (information theory) and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing between 2012 and 2015. Since February 2018 Prof. Stanczak has been the chairman of the ITU-T focus group on machine learning for future networks including 5G.

Eng., E​lectrical Electronic Engineering specializing in Communication Engineering – 2007 from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu; and presently undergoing PhD Educational Technology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

    Seongbok Baik is a research scientist in the Division of Network Infrastructure Innovation at KT Infra R&D Laboratory where he has been a research member since 1995. He has been serving on FG-ML5G as a Vice Chair since 2018.

    Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honored Worker of Communications of Russia, Science Consultant in Federal State Unitary Enterprise Radio Research and Development Institute (FSUE NIIR). Viliam Saryan is State Prize of Russia winner, has 2 prizes of the Russian Government in science and technology. Author of more than 200 scientific papers and 47 inventions and patents. He has studied at Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Communications (today Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics) and the Department of Engineering Physics of MSU. He worked in NIIR from 1965 to 1991. During 1992 to 2004 he was the Vice-president of TV-Inform. Since 2004 he is working in NIIR as Science Consultant. Dr. V.K. Saryan is professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University) and the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics. Area of scientific interest of Dr. Saryan includes the theory of information management networks, the theory of ICT services, development of the model of limitations of the development of information and communication technologies, development of customized management in emergency situations, etc. Dr. V. Saryan was elected a foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.​

    China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT)
    Cheng Qiang, he is senior engineer of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. He serves as Vice Chairman of ITU-T FG-ML5G from 2019-2020 and the Chairman of Telecom Project Group of Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance of China from 2016. He engaged in broadband network technology and artificial intelligent research, presided over the drafting of more than 20 communications industry standards and China national standards. He will give a welcome speech from ITU and AIIA, and a brief introduction of  AI/ML challenge.

    Dr Salih Ergut has more than 15 years of experience in the telecommunication domain in academia and industry. He has worked for vendor and operator companies in the sector including Ericsson Wireless (San Diego, CA), Ericsson Silicon Valley, Aware (Boston, MA), Nextwave (San Diego, CA), Turk Telekom Group (Istanbul, Turkey) and is currently working at Turkcell 5G R&D team in Istanbul, Turkey. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Bilkent University (Ankara, Turkey), MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Northeastern University (Boston, MA), and PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from University of California San Diego (La Jolla, CA). His research interests include wireless communications, machine learning, big data technologies, 5G technologies, SDN, NFV, and IoT.
