AI is fundamentally reshaping how information is distributed. As more people turn to AI summaries or chatbots to get answers to their questions, websites are experiencing a steady decline in user traffic. Industries that rely on traffic for revenue are thus forced to adapt their business models. The challenge is particularly acute for local and independent media, an industry that has long been under economic strain due to its reliance on subscriptions, advertising, and licensing. To remain financially sustainable, the media needs a way to participate in the AI-driven economy while maintaining control over and benefiting from how AI models use their content. At the same time, AI companies have a vested interest in independent media’s viability, so their models have access to high-quality, original, and diverse content. This session will explore this problem, and identify practical solutions for sustaining independent media and a diverse information ecosystem on an AI-driven web.
